The walls are bare, the cupboards are empty, we eat on paper and plastic. My nails are disintegrating after too many hours spent cleaning the kitchen. I have lost count of how many boxes I have packed, but there never seems to be enough boxes left. There are things everywhere.
We have lived here for five years, and I can’t believe how much stuff we have accumulated. I pack things down, I throw things away, but it never ends. There is always more. Our apartment is only 76 sqm, where was everything hiding all this time?
We’re moving next week, after five years. Alexander was only 3 when we moved here.
My husband and I were beginning a new chapter in our life when we moved here, leaving bad memories behind. The years we’ve lived here have been filled with work and soulsearching, and we’ve grown five lifetimes, not five years.
It is time to move on, to reap what we’ve sown. The work is still not complete, there are still depths in our souls that we haven’t explored, but in many ways we are entirely different people today than we were five years ago.
We have grown – grown up – and it is time to leave this workplace behind.

What a coincidence! My son (about your age) and his wife have been doing the same thing the last few weeks as they too have bought their first house. They are lucky as they are being helped by his sister and her fiancee. Also, my daughter in laws parents have insisted on helping clean the new house and the apartment. In the next few days depending on the rain staying away they have a couple of his college buddies with a truck and my truck to move the big things. I have been getting many calls on how to fix leaky pipes and valves or should we just get a plumber. I really hope that you don’t have the plumbing problems that he is finding.
