oh yeah, I’m a wild one.
Seeing as I am already running a business in which my aim is to teach people how to care about and make the best of their curly hair, and how I would like to take that business to the next level by opening my own salon, I would SO want to get some proper Curlaboration training.
You know me. You know how my brain works. You can surely see where I am going with this.
Yes, I am exploring the possibility of going to New York for a couple of days next year. The workshop is one day only, a Monday, so I’m thinking that I could hop on a plane on Saturday or Sunday, go to New York, get the training on Monday and then fly back east on Tuesday. By myself.
How crazy is that?
It is a scary thought. People gun each other down on the streets of New York, don’t they? Well, the Devachan Salon is on 560 Broadway, in Soho. The location could be worse, right? I don’t know much about New York but who hasn’t heard of Broadway – and judging by the hotels and stores I have found in the neighborhood, I think it is pretty safe. Right? Please say I’m right, because I have absolutely no idea.
Please help me out here. Can I go to New York City on my own, where should I stay, is it safe to walk or should I take a taxi at all times, should I abandon the whole idea? I know it’s a long flight for only two or three nights but that’s really all I can afford and I’m not crazy about the idea of going sightseeing alone, so don’t worry about that part.
Give me your thoughts about New York City!

You’ll be fine.
You’ll be zipping so fast from the airport, the training course, the hotel, the little gifts for your husband and your son, back to the airport, etc, that those people who gun each other down day in day out in the streets of New York won’t even be able to take aim.
By the way: Jerry Lee Lewis or Iggy Pop?
Iggy Pop of course
I beg to differ.
It’s the Killer for me.
Go! And definitely don’t come back after just one day, that would be such a waste. See the sites at least. I’ve never been to NY but I hope to do so one day.
New York is perfectly safe and wonderful and breathtaking and beautiful.
And the New Yorkers are great. Do it!
P.S. I feel safer in New York than I do in most North American cities.
P.P.S. Like so safe that I walk around alone at night there.
I take italian classes in soho every Monday and Wednesday. It is very safe I love soho.
As far as places to stay check with the people putting on the course and maybe they can hook you up with a place to rent or a place to crash with another participant. NYC is like any other city that has millions of people. The area that you will be going to, for the conference, should not be any worse than places that you might have been in in Sweden or Italy. Good luck!
You will be very safe. New York is wonderful. I think you should stay a bit longer though as it will be far too short.
Go Annika! Everyone must see NYC at least once. You will be safe-it’s not scary at all and Soho is wonderful. And yes, soend at least one or two more days!
Go and don’t worry. New York gets a bad rap, but it’s really a great place to visit. And, despite what you may hear, New Yorkers are pretty friendly. Go and enjoy!
I have lived in NYC my whole life. It’s really not as dangerous as people think. Plus it’s the greatest city in the world… so you have to come and see it!
Just don’t stop on the street when people try to sell you candy at night. haha Seriously, you’ll be fine.
Take the Staten Island Ferry if you have time. You pass right by the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, get a great view of the NYC skyline and if you step foot on Staten Island you’ll be standing in the location with the most Italian Americans in the entire USA. The population is 70% Italian American. Garibaldi and Meucci both lived there… and so do I (well, i will be living here for 2 more months then it’s off to Europe!)
Annika, you will love NYC!! The energy is amazing, and this workshop sounds like the perfect thing for you!
Like any big city, be careful–watch out for muggers, etc.. But NY isn’t any more dangerous than other big cities. Besides, it doesn’t look like you’ll be venturing into the ghetto! Definately take the time to see at least a few of the major sights…would be a shame to pay all that money and not see New York!
Coming from Seattle I was absolutely petrified moving to the ‘big city,’ thinking that every 5 minutes people were getting attacked or mugged. I’ve been here for nearly 10 years and I have to say, NYC is one of the safest cities you could be in!
Please visit and enjoy yourself!
My boyfriend and I spent 5 days in NYC this summer and it was wonderful! I felt very safe there. We took the subway and some taxi’s – but we mainly walked everywhere. We stayed near Central Park – but took the subway to SoHo area – awesome place. I live in the Los Angeles area – which is a driving town, so it was very nice being able to walk most places.
I second all the opinions above that NY is very safe and you should go
I went, twice already, to visit some friends who live in Queens and pretty much did most of the sighseeting all by myself – the city is very easy to figure out and there are lots of ways to get around, metro being the easiest but I also walked, a lot! Just make sure you’ve got a map and don’t worry, there are lots of people around everywhere any time of day so it’s easy to ask for directions and feel safe.
Just ditto’ing what everyone else said. You should go and ENJOY yourself. If you ever don’t feel safe, just use your instincts. You will love it. I know you might not want to spend the money, but I think you should try to at least on Saturday so you can rest and orient yourself on Sunday and make sure you get the most out of your workshop. I think you might regret not staying an extra day or two…
Please let us know what you decide!
YES! GO! COME! NY is the best, Soho is one of my favorite places, very laid back and groovy/hip. You’ll love it, and you’re far enough away from Times Square to feel like you aren’t one in a million tourists! Let me know if you need any help planning…we’re close enough to spit on NYC (not that I would, hahahaha)
I live 20 minutes away as you know Annika and I have been going in and out alone for many years-safely!It truly is a very safe city, and desoite what you may have heard, the people are very friendly and helpful!
Just use common sense like you would in any other big city…you’ll love it–and I’m here if you need anything ,have to ask questions..and we’d better meet finally!:-D
