Time: Two weeks
Budget: Very limited
Definite route: Gävle – Milan. Time needed, 3 days in each direction.
Possible added route: Milan – Positano. Time needed, 8 hours of driving in each direction, so 2-4 days of driving.
6 days are needed to drive Gävle-Milan and back. 8 days remain. We could drive four hours south and spend a week in Tuscany, or we could drive four hours south, spend a night in Tuscany, drive another four to five hours south, spend three or four days in Positano/Amalfi, then do the same on the way back.
How much time can one spend in a car during a two week period of time?
Is a few days in paradise worth the extra sixteen hours of driving?
Damn you, Italy, for being such a long country. You too, Sweden, as your length means that it takes a whole day for us just to get out of the country. Damn you both!
I want to go down there to satiate this hunger, calm this burning desire for the area that eats me from inside. I want my husband to see Amalfi in the summer, to see it the way I see it, to finally see why I love it so much. I want to show him Capri. ***
Alexander wants to go there because he loves it there and most of all because of a certain longhaired mermaid who jumped and skipped her way into his heart more than two years ago.
There’s nothing wrong with northern Italy, and I’d much MUCH rather go to northern Italy than not go to Italy at all…
but can we really be so close and not go all the way?
Once you have tasted flight,
you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward,
for there you have been,
and there you will always long to return
– Leonardo da Vinci
*** then again, I also want to show him Tuscany, because I suspect that suits him better. I think he will love Tuscany.
And yet again, I don’t even know if this trip will happen. So far it only exists in my mind. Anybody who thinks I overthink things, raise your hand!

Your passion for the South betrays your hesitance for the North as “interesting as it is”. Love the LEONARDO QUOTE! HOW ABOUT “aAS LIFE IS ACTION AND PASSION IT IS REQUIRED OF A MAN (WOMAN) TO SHARE THE ACTION AND PASSION OF THE TIME AT THE PERIL OF HAVING BEEN JUDGED NOT TO HAVE LIVED”
Judge Oliver Wendell Homes.
JAP – there’ll be a nine year old in the car. I think it’s better to count on three days. For the rest – well, that’s kind of my motto too
Francesco – so what about you? Are you not passionate about the south? Do you think I am mistaken?
Great quote by the way
Great Blog, Annicka, I like to read it.Your writing is excellent.
Your love for Italy it’s a surprise for those living here like me.You should know we italians do not appreciate too much our Country (often with good reasons).
As a hairdresser it shouldn’t be difficult to find a job here, especially in the north but be aware we do not have a welfare like Sweden and be prepared to be always angry with the govern !
Have a pleasant stay in Italy
Thank you Riccardo! You’re not the first Italian to tell me that – but I know what you mean, I am equally surprised every time someone expresses a love for Sweden
Forgot one thing. As a reader of Bella vita in Liguria you should already know it,If you are on budget, I strongly suggest to visit 5 terre and Portofino. Nothing to envy to the Amalfi coast and… closer. To me are the best places in the world . Ciao
You guys are young and I’m sure that you will end up in Positano this Summer! My wife and I on the other hand will end up here on the USA probably bugging my sister and her husband or our kids! Good luck.
a certain (now shorter haired) mermaid has just received a certain letter from a dashing young Swedish boy and is thrilled to bits that he might be visiting her again!
She has already stolen some of my notepaper to reply to him!
Why don’t you go to Tuscany and have the mermaid and her family meet you there? Wherever you go you will be happy-you’ll be in Italy!
You go for it!! In my mind the best of Italy is Tuscany – have you ever visited Florence – if not you’re in for a treat!!
Florence is really hot if you go in the Summer! We used to include Florence in our trips but the heat just made it unbearable after starting out in Naples and a few beach towns. If you don’t go to Amalfi or Positano try the beach towns up North outside of Florence.
Annika,
Are you going to stop in Florence and see me???? I will arrive on the 23rd of June. Would love to see you again!!!
baci!!
I would love to see more of Florence – and you!
If we do make it to Italy, which is not even nearly sure, I hope we can get to Florence to see you. I think my husband would love northern Tuscany!
