Two nervous breakdowns and one new laptop later, I have arrived in Italy. I landed late at night in Rome, feeling very calm for once. I had arranged for a shuttle service to pick me up and was met at the airport by a beautiful pregnant Roman woman. I was a little worried about how the two of us would manage my two giant pieces of luggage, but the driver was a rather strong man and helped us out. He took a liking to me since my last name is also the name of a famous car from Modena, and funny enough, offered me a job answering the phone in their office in Rome – they are looking for people who speak English and Italian and he thought I’d be great. To his disappointment I told him that I actually live in Perugia and my school schedule will be perhaps a bit full. He gave me his number just the same.

He took the scenic route to the hotel, which was fine since I’d paid for the shuttle service in advance. My friends, Rome is a breath of fresh air. It’s always so live and chaotic, and I feel it really comes alive at night. I think the driver was amused at my gasps of “oooooh” and “aaaahh” – what can I say, Rome never ceases to amaze me. One minute you’re driving past people on vespas and people in cars talking on cell phones, and the next minute you’re passing an ancient artifact of some sort. I checked into my hotel, and the fellow working there kept throwing in comments like “God you’re beautiful.” in between sentences as he explained where things were, etc. Welcome to Rome, ha ha. The only thing I did after that was shower and go to bed.

I woke up this morning, threw open the shutters to find lively, warm sunny streets. Good morning Rome, I said. I got dressed and got out as soon as I could to get some coffee and take a walk. There is nothing more fun than trying to get lost in Rome. I happened upon the Fontana di Trevi without even trying (ironically, if you DO try to find it, it’s impossible). Roamed through Palatine hill, observed some of the more “modern” architecture around the city, and here I am, trying to decide when to go to Perugia. I have to call my soon-to-be coinquilino, roommate, to let him know when I’ll be arriving. I’m a little nervous about that, since it’s hard for me to speak Italian on the phone and I also don’t think he really speaks any English, but I’m sure we’ll manage…

Until next time…
