(random thinking) When the day comes…

September 12th, 2006

…I’m going to arrive in Rome with my two heavy suitcases around 10:00pm. grrrrr.

I have nobody to pick me up. I will some how manage to get my things and myself to the city where I’ll stay a night, and the next morning I can get a shuttle bus to Perugia. At first I was cringing at the thought of lugging those heavy things around but then I remembered that any time I’ve had to lug something on and off trains in Italy, there has always been someone to help me – make that several people. I usually attract a team of other passengers who just grab my things and put them on or off the train for me – they’re probably just in a hurry and want me out of their way. These are the same people who, when I was first learning to get my train tickets from the automated machines they have at the stations, would just cut and get mine for me so I would be out of their hair. (Now, of course, I breeze in and out of those machines and nobody cuts.) Being in the way isn’t always a bad thing, you see.

Anyway, I am currently worrying about the journey over with my heavy things, forgetting that it’s just one day of that, and that it’s not a short vacation this time, so I have a while before I have to do it again.

I see you backslid on the one suitcase thing:-) I’ve always found Italians the kindest and most helpful people on trains, so am sure you’ll get help.
Glad to hear that your visa came through. You’re almost there!

I’ve enjoyed reading your blog (just discovered it a few weeks ago)…I’m so excited for your life changing move to Italy!

    Congratulations on getting your visa!

Can’t wait to hear about your adventures in Italy.

    Safe travels…

To be landing so late at night! Aw, I wish you were landing in Torino, instead of in Rome! My husband and I would have been happy to pick you up and bring you safely to your hotel. But, as the others are saying, Italians are quite friendly and helpful, and you’ll be just fine. You seem so happy about coming to Italy. It is infectious. I am happy for you! Congrats!

    Hi Christina,

I thought I should finally write you this message. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart (truly) for encouraging me to continue on my quest to become Italian. I know it seems strange to you that I am an Italian-American living in Japan. It’s a long story. But really, without you, I wasn’t sure what to do. I might qualify as an Italian since birth, but maybe at the same time I don’t… You encouraged me to try. To this day I am not sure I qualify, but if I do, if I become Italian, I will never forget your kind words that helped me (encouraged me) to do it.

I am reading this book right now called “The Aclhcomist”. Ironically my Japanese student (who has since become my good friend) told me to read it. It’s all about reading signs. If you’ve figured me out at this point, you know I’m not really one for reading signs. But somehow I still believe, and I believe I was meant to meet you and you were meant to encourage me.

Sorry if it sounds creepy. Really, I’m not stalking you. =) But thanks for your encouragement.
